§ 17.5PURPOSE AND PROCEDURE

Washington's real party in interest rule assures that the controversy before the court will be justiciable, as only adverse parties having direct and substantial interests in the result will be included in the action. In so doing, CR 17(a) indirectly "protect[s] a defendant from a subsequent action by the party actually entitled to recover and to expedite litigation by not permitting technical or narrow constructions to interfere with the merits of legitimate controversies."
