§9.2 CLASSIFICATIONS
Historically, the term "crops" has been defined in a number of ways, and the importance of their classification as "natural" or "industrial" has varied over time.
(1) Problems of classifications
Early court decisions defined "crops" to mean everything produced from the earth by annual planting, cultivation, and labor. Courts also have used the term in a broader sense to include the annual products of the land and even grasses, fruits, and berries. 21A AM. JUR. 2D Crops §1 (2008); see also Miethke v. Pierce County, 173 Wash. 381, 23 P.2d 405 (1933) (nursery stock not considered "crops").
