While Social Security is a popular program, many Americans support changes to it-including some that would fundamentally alter the entitlement program. A survey found Americans supported the following reforms:

* Ensuring cost-of-living-adjustments (COLAs) keep pace with true inflation

* Taxing higher earners more to support Social Security

* Providing a Social Security credit to unpaid caregivers

* Providing COLAs only to middle- or low-income households

* Eliminating the cap on payroll taxes

* Privatizing part of Social Security benefits

* Means-testing benefits
