For the past four decades, New Hampshire has been the fastest-growing state not only in New England, but in the entire nine-state Northeast region. These pressures have been--and continue to be--particularly intense along New Hampshire's seacoast, where sprawling development is one of the greatest threats to the critically important and highly sensitive Great Bay estuary.

The impacts of sprawl on water quality and the many important recreational, marine and wildlife values of the Great Bay estuary are among the reasons CLF is tracking a two-year feasibility study for a regional sewage outfall. Established by the state legislature, the study is considering a massive, centralized system that would collect wastewater from up to 42 communities in the seacoast watershed and discharge it to the Gulf of Maine.
