Engineers use science and technology so that products, services, and systems can better serve the needs of our society. With the theme "Turning Ideas into Reality" as their focus, more than 35,000 engineers across the country will participate in Engineers Week 1996. A variety of activities are planned for Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau that include the Discover "E" program for students, competitions applying science and technology, awards, banquets and public displays.

National Engineers Week was founded in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers to increase the public awareness of engineers' contributions to our quality of life. It is always celebrated at the time of George Washington's birthday, who was a military engineer and land surveyor. Washington's technical skill earned him the title of first U.S. engineer. His call for engineers and engineering education on June 9, 1778 from Valley Forge is considered to be the genesis of the U.S. Army Engineers School.
