Board shaped by election, new appointment

The California LawyerMay 2012Board shaped by election, new appointment The composition of the State Bar Board of Trustees continues to shift with an upcoming election and the first of five appointments to the board by the California Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court is accepting applications through June 1 from lawyers interested in serving as the court's first-ever appointee to the board. The individual selected will take office at the State Bar Annual Meeting in October 2012.

The court will choose four more board members over the next three years as a result of legislation (SB 163) changing the board's makeup and shrinking its size from 23 to 19 members.

Meanwhile, five lawyers are running for two seats on the board in the first election since the legislation took effect. The districts are being redrawn to align with the six appellate districts in the state.

Ballots were mailed April 30 to bar members who live in District 4 (Imperial, Inyo, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego counties) and District 5 (Fresno, Kern, Kings, Madera, Mariposa, Merced, Stanislaus, Tulare and Tuolumne counties).
