Catholicism in retreat?

According to the latest Pew Research Center survey, more than 425 million Catholics live in Latin America, equivalent to 40 percent of the world's Catholic population. However, identification with Catholicism has declined in recent years.

Until the 1960s, 90 percent of the adult Latin American population considered themselves to be Catholic, and now only 69 percent do so. In almost all countries that religion has been losing members, it's due to them joining Protestant churches or just saying they do not belong to any religion. For example, one of every four Nicaraguans, one of every five Brazilians, and one of every seven Venezuelans have declared themselves as "lapsed Catholics."
