The outlook wasn't brilliant for the D.C. nine that term. Support for Roe v. Wade looked like it still was holding firm. And when Akron reaffirmed it, and Webster died at four, It looked like Roe v. Wade would rule the land forevermore. Some fans gave up hoping that the Court would change its views, But others thought the states might yet regain the right to choose. For good or ill, the states once more would say who can abort If Governor Bob Casey could just get his case to court. But Stevens was a Justice, as was also Harry Blackmun, And the former was a lulu and the latter was a hackman. Two runs down, the faithful fought to keep their hopes alive, For there seemed but little chance of Casey getting up to five. But Rehnquist came home safely, as did also Whizzer White, And Thomas and Scalia hammered Roe clear out of sight. And when the dust had lifted and the fans looked at the score, The Framers' side was out in front; the game was two to four. Then from five thousand law professors' throats there came a wail. It rumbled out of Cambridge; it filled the halls at Yale. The cry arose from every trendy academic sort, For Casey, mighty Casey, was advancing to the Court. Casey's fans were gleeful as they looked down at the roll Of who was batting, next on deck, and waiting in the hole. Three Reagan-Bush appointees--each one a loyal minion. The game was all but over; that was the joint opinion. The press corps lined up knee to knee along the left field border (Their standard shift when dealing with the middle of the order). O'Connor was up, with Souter and Kennedy to complement her. They needed just one hit to right--or even to right-center. All eyes were on O'Connor as the fans searched for a clue: Was the pressure just too much, her burden now undue? She took...
