Canadian government combines National Library and Archives.

Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps recently announced the creation of the Library and Archives of Canada, a new agency formed by the convergence of the collections and expertise of the National Library of Canada and the National Archives of Canada.

In addition to combining the two entities' functions and services, the new organization will combine the expertise of more than 1,000 staff members and take advantage of the latest technology to develop greater strength and depth. The goal is to enhance the organization's role as a major national cultural agency. To attain this goal, the Library and Archives of Canada will provide leadership and support to the country's archival and library networks while continuing to represent them on an international level.
