Heavy rains in southern Italy are endangering the world's most treasured time capsule. Pompeii, a major port town in ancient Rome, was destroyed in 79 a.d. by the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius. When archaeologists discovered Pompeii in the 18th century, they found much of the city--and traces of hundreds of its inhabitants (see photo)--preserved in volcanic ash, giving them a vivid picture of life in ancient Rome. But because of recent bad weather, parts of a temple arch, tomb, and shop wall in Pompeii have crumbled. The damage, coming after other collapses, has sparked concern among archaeologists...
