A select group of 40 young leaders from Latin America--from sectors related to politics, academics, labor, business, student affairs, and the media--debated with each other at an event called "The Future of Latin America: The Vision of Young Leaders," organized by the Andean Development Corporation (CAF) and the Brookings Institute on September 21 in Washington DC.

OAS Secretary General José Miguel Insulza also participated in the event. In his remarks he emphasized the challenges that young people in the hemisphere will face in their future as they participate politically, search for solutions, and seek new ways of responding to problems like inequality and crime. The Secretary General declared himself an optimist on the future of the region, however, and he highlighted the importance of strengthening democracy and exercising that democracy through the participation of a new generation of leaders.

Economic trends, the social agenda, the middle class, inclusion, democracy in Latin America, and the foreign policy of the region were all topics addressed by the invited speakers, and participants debated and...
