If you want to be a cabbie in Milwaukee, you still have plenty of hurdles to jump through. But one major barrier has just been lifted: The city is no longer placing a mandatory cap on the number of taxi drivers they will allow.

The victory comes as a result of a lawsuit by the economic-liberty litigators at the Institute for Justice. Prior to the suit, Milwaukee allowed only 321 cabs in the city. Almost half of the medallions were owned by a single company, and the cap pushed the value of taxi permits from $85 to $150,000.
