C. Cost-of-Living Adjustments
Military retired pay is protected against inflation by law. 10 U.S.C. § 1401a. All DOD retirees are eligible to receive an annual increase in their disposable retired pay via a COLA (Cost-of-Living Adjustment). 10 U.S.C. § 1401a(b). The amount of the increase is determined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ CPI (Consumer Price Index) from the third quarter of the previous year versus the current year’s third quarter (July, August, and September).
