Matt Cooper's piece ("Rebels With Applause," April) was a breath of fresh air content-wise for the Monthly, one of my favorite magazines. However, he left out the great George Carlin, perhaps America's most edge-cutting, subversive standup comedian. Carlin was busted with Lenny Bruce in London; became the hippy dippy weatherman on "The Smothers Brothers"; and went on to mock every aspect of American culture in a very consistently subversive way. Ditto for Richard Pryor, who also was not mentioned but is undoubtedly also one of America's greatest, most subversive comics. Leon Harris of CNN...
