A heart attack snatched George Breisacher at his home Aug. 11, 13 days before his 65th birthday. Born in Ohio, reared in Michigan, he came South in 1973 to work as a staff illustrator for The Charlotte Observer. On the side, he created a syndicated comic strip, Knobs, and in 1981 took over Mutt and Jeff, which was the oldest daily strip--running 75 years--when it ended two years later. He was elected president of the National Cartoonists Society in 1997.
