I spent about a decade as an officer of the Chapel Hill Bird Club, an organization founded in the 1930s that helps encourage a devotion to birding, nature and conservation. I participate in eight to 10 bird counts a year for the National Audubon Society. Its Christmas Bird Counts, in particular, are one of the largest--if not the largest--examples of citizen science in the world.
