Building Alaska: top 49 businesses boost economy.

PositionABM's Top 49ers: Building Alaska 2005

When you think of Building Alaska, you may think of our quarterly construction special section, which describes in detail aspects of the construction industry--everything from a statewide roundup, to future projects, to the shortage of construction workers in Alaska, to the new convention center. We are recognized as a leader in covering statewide construction.

But this month, we are celebrating a different type of Building Alaska. We selected this for the theme of our Top 49er's Special Section and luncheon, held this year on Oct. 3 at the Hotel Captain Cook in conjunction with the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce. At this event, we will honor the Top 49 leading Alaskan-owned and -operated companies in the state, based on 2004 gross revenues.

"These companies have built up Alaska in so many ways," said Vern McCorkle, publisher of ABM. "They have combined revenues of $6.9 billion and provide more than 22,500 jobs. They donate to nonprofits and other organizations. They produce products and services we need. They are the backbone of the communities they operate in, and some even have a national or an international reach."

Jim Martin, director of sales and marketing for ABM, said the bulk of the list is comprised of Native regional and village corporations. "Fifteen of the 49 fall into this category," he said. "Their combined employee totals represent 42 percent of the 49ers list and their revenues total 57 percent of the list. Arctic Slope Regional Corp. alone has 2004 revenues of $1.3 billion. All together, the 13 Native corporations have revenues of about $3.9 billion. This is significant."

Leading the list, as it has for the past 11 years, is Arctic Slope Regional Corp. "This is the fourth year it has topped the list with revenues of more than $1 billion," said McCorkle. "It has accomplished much since its inception in 1972, as part of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act." Seven of the top 10 are Native corporations (Arctic Slope, Chugach Alaska Corp., Chenega Corp., NANA Development Corp., Ukpeagvik Inupiat Corp, Doyon Ltd. and Sealaska Corp.)

The other three in the Top 10 are Lynden Inc. (fourth place), VECO Corp. (sixth place) and Chugach Electric Association (eighth place).

"Categories that also have high numbers of businesses represented on the list include F.I.R.E., which is finance, insurance and real estate, and retail trade," said Martin. "Eight companies on the list comprise the F.I.R.E. sector, and seven comprise retail trade." The construction industry also is represented with five companies.

New to the list this/ear or returning after a year or several years absence are: Construction Machiner Industrial LLC, Goldbelt Inc., Homer Electric Association Inc., Olgoonik Corp. and The Eyak Corp.

To qualify as a Top 49er company, it had to have at least $30.6 million in 2004 gross revenues. Last year the 49th company on the list had revenues of $26.15 million.

"We will be presenting each of these companies with a plaque in their honor," said McCorkle. "To make this list is quite an accomplishment and we are glad to be a part in recognizing these 49 companies. This is the 21st year we've done this and we are always pleased to see new companies join the list. And we are always proud of those who remain on it year after year. They truly are Building Alaska."
