Herbert C. Bonner Bridge. Opened in 1963, Bonnet Bridge carries N.C. 12 across the Oregon Inlet to Hatteras Island. It's the only road access for the island's 4,300 full-time residents and thousands of tourists. The 2.7-mile bridge cost $4 million, with the federal government picking up two-thirds of the tab. Funding was orchestrated by Washington, N.C, native Herbert Bonner, who served in the US. House of Representatives from 1940 until his death in 1965.
