The Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association is suing Cherokee County, Georgia, over impact fees on new development there. Impact fees are one-time charges on new development to help offset the cost of growth. Cherokee County's fees will pay for parks, roads, public safety patrol and facilities, and libraries. Last April, Cherokee County became the first county in Georgia to impose impact fees that would provide services for all county residents. Cherokee County has collected nearly $2 million in fees since collection began on May 1, but none of the money has been spent because of the lawsuit. The county charges $1,830 for a new home.
