When individual, disposable water bottles first came out, they were a luxury. The initial reaction was: why would people want to pay to carry water bottles with them? Then the convenience of it all sunk in and the industry took off like a rocket. Suddenly, free water fountains disappeared and patrons could be charged $3-$4 or more for a half-liter at an amusement park or movie theater. In recent years, the environmental impact of these bottles has come to the forefront, and that, coupled with the economic reality, has caused many of us to switch to carrying our own reusable betties filled with inexpensive, filtered tap water.
