Broward County Commissioners in October voted to implement living wage rules that will set the county's minimum living wage at $9.57 an hour. About 380 county employees earning less than that can now expect to earn almost $20,000 a year. This adjustment is expected to cost the county about $1.3 million a year. Employees making less than $12.57 an hour will receive pay increases from 20 cents to $1.48 an hour, which will cost an additional $934,000. The rules also extend to private service-oriented companies that hold contracts of more than $100,000 with the county.
