It is painful for Wisconsin natives living elsewhere to hear about the negative changes that are transforming our home state from a friendly, progressive land to a cramped, hostile, reactionary outpost under Scott Walker and his Republican crew.

We've heard about Walker's assaults on workers' rights and on public education ("Wisconsin's Voucher Vultures," by Rebecca Kemble, August issue), and his chumminess with the American Legislative Exchange Council and rightwing billionaires.

But what has weakened the state's Democratic Party? Why isn't it fighting back harder?

And is the University of Wisconsin still a progressive...
