ColoradoBiz in June won the Association of Area Business Publication's first place awards for BEST MAGAZINE and BEST OVERALL DESIGN of a magazine, topping about sixteen statewide or regional business magazines around the country for the year 2001.

AABP, based in Los Angeles, is a nonprofit international organization that represents more than 80 independent magazine and newspaper members in the United States, Mexico, Canada and Australia.

Its annual editorial excellence awards are judged by journalism faculty at the University of Missouri-Columbia, one of the three best journalism schools in the nation.

The judges cited the magazine you're reading for doing "a great job telling the stories of Colorado business, both visually and textually. It is designed and written with youthful appeal and savvy.... This is one of the few magazines that takes the risk to be creative and imaginative in the business field."

In judging the magazine first in overall design, the faculty described it as "tops in its category because it combines all the design elements to make a great visual-storytelling magazine. The covers were varied and eye-catching. ... Classy use of photographs and elegant use of white space."

Those are compliments to warm a journalist's or an art director's heart.

Last year's 12 issues were produced by a terrific batch of free-lance writers, photographers, illustrators and printers, and edited and designed by our editorial team of three: myself, Art Director Jurgen Mantzke, Managing Editor Mike Taylor and a fourth, our former Managing Editor Mike Woelflein.
