A boost from Wendell Berry.

Each time I receive a new copy of The Progressive with a plea for renewing my subscription or for money to help keep it in circulation, I think, "I need to cut back on spending; I live on a fixed income." And then I open my most recent copy and read an article like the one by Wendell Berry and it lifts my heart in a difficult to describe way ("It All Turns on Affection," August issue). I read other articles and realize that I need what your--I really hate to simply call it a magazine--journalism does for my spirit.

When I realize that there is a much larger community of progressives out there than in the conservative area where I live, it gives me hope, strength, and courage.

Wendell Berry's essay reminded me of the young man who came from Colorado to speak to a group of us here in my city. He and his small family are trying to live according to the human and ecological principles talked about in the essay on their small farm there. He told us...
