It was a bit serendipitous that I had just finished reading Lewis Buzbee's The Yellow-Lighted Bookshop when I picked up my March/April Bookmarks and found that, like Mr. Buzbee, you were mourning the closing of many independent bookstores. His memoir tells of his lifelong love affair (he refers to himself as a "book luster") with books and bookstores--with a good measure of the history of both thrown in. It is a delight.

I am fortunate to live in Columbus, Ohio, which has a top-notch public library system and a variety of bookstores, both independent and chain. All of them survive, and most thrive. In its prior life, the Village Bookshop was a church. Its stock of secondhand and remaindered books is...
