DESIGN PROTECTION
Herman Cohen Jehoram, editor. Leyden: Sijthoff, 1976. Pp.
203.
This book contains papers presented at a conference on the
legal protection of industrial designs, held in Amsterdam in May,
1975. The main emphasis is on the law of several continental
countries, especially the Netherlands, but one speaker describes
the law in the United Kingdom.
A
starting point for much discus-
sion is the B.enelux Design Act which became effective on January
lst, 1975. The law of industrial designs is influenced by several
legal areas, including patents, trademarks, copyrights and unfair
competition, but seems to be distinct from all
of
these. Most
of
the papers appear to have been given in languages other than
English; the translations are understandable but not
of
high liter-
ary quality.
INVESTMENT INSURANCE IN INTERNATIONAL LAW
Theodor Meron. Dobbs Ferry, New York: Oceana Publications,
1976. Pp. 935.
This work presents an apparently comprehensive treatment
of
insurance protection for overseas investments. Such protection
has increased in importance as foreign investments have ex-
panded greatly and xenophobia has not diminished. The major
emphasis is on United States practice, particularly in relation to
the Overseas Private Investment Corporation, an agency of the
U.S.
government established in 1969. The institutions of Canada
and the United Kingdom are also considered. Several hundred
pages
of
cases, statutes and regulations are included.
PERSONAL FINANCE, SECOND EDITION
Paul Hastings and Norbert Mietus. New York: McGraw-Hill,
1977. Pp. 612.
Law teachers who are assigned courses in personal finance may
wish to consider this text, one
of
the authors of which is a profes-
sor of law. Much current material is included. The level
of
presen-
tation seems higher than in some personal finance books, yet a
high degree of readability is achieved. An instructor’s manual is
available.
