This book is an excellent blend of political, legal, strategic, and economic
aspects of the subject. Historians should now devote themselves to historic,
social, and cultural developments as they impinge upon the problem of contin-
ental survival.

The five lectures in this small volume are not an appraisal of the first year
of the Alliance for Progress, as the flyleaf states, but contribute to a wider public
understanding of what is involved in this collective effort on the part of almost
all the countries of this hemisphere toward the furtherance of economic and so-
cial progress. The lectures were delivered at the Pan American Union in Wash-
ington during the spring of 1962, under the sponsorship of the Johns Hopkins
School of Advanced International Studies.
Men qualified to speak with greater authority on the Alliance for Progress
