The

editor

of

this

book

has

collected

various

short

fragments

of

Karl

Marx’s

writings

under

headings

arranged

alphabetically.

The

project

is

a

failure.

There

are

really

no

positive

features

to

balance

the

book’s

numerous

shortcomings.

Some

nineteen

sources

are

cited

for

the

material

quoted

in

the

book,

but

the

editor

has

failed

to

indicate

exactly

what

edition

of

Marx’s

writings

he

has

quoted

or

the

page

on

which

the

quoted

material

can

be

found.

Also

there

is

no

indication

of

the

date

any

of

the

passages

were

originally

written

or

published

and

there

is

no

attempt

at

a

critical

evaluation

of

the

published

editions

of

Marx’s

writings.

This

makes

the

book

almost

entirely

worthless

as

a

scholarly

tool.

But

matters

get

worse

as

one

turns

to

the

actual

entries.

The

book

does

violence

to

the

meaning

and

significance

of

the

material

it

contains.

Clearly

the

editor

has

collected

only

the

most

significant

passages

from Marx.

For

example,

under

the

heading

&dquo;youthful

laborer&dquo;

one

finds

the

following:

&dquo;Capital

wants

larger

numbers

of

youthful

laborers,

a

smaller

number

of

adults.&dquo;

&dquo;The

largest

part

of

society

is

the

working

class&dquo;

is

an

entry

under

&dquo;workers’

combination.&dquo;

Under

&dquo;value&dquo;

the

edi-

tor

quotes

Marx

to

the

effect

that

&dquo;value

is

the

cornerstone

of

the

economic

edifice.&dquo;

Under

&dquo;faith&dquo;

the

devout

will

find

Marx

saying

that

&dquo;it

is

faith

that

brings

salva-

tion.&dquo;

These

are

quite

typical

of

the

passages

so

nicely

arranged

by

the

editor.

It

is

to

be

hoped

that

this

book

will

not

enjoy

even

a

modest

sale.

politics

in

Africa

can

be

approached

from

several

perspectives.

It

can

be

looked

at

as

an

epiphenomenal

product

of

domestic

politics

or

ingrained

irrationality.

Or

it

can

be

viewed

through

the

eyes

of

the

super-powers,

and

cata-

gorized

in

terms

of

the

&dquo;East-West&dquo;

struggle,

the

cold

war,

and

all

that.

Or

it

can

be

regarded

as

an

intra-African

international

system

in

which

nations

and

blocs

such

as

the

former

Casablanca

and

Monrovia

powers

maneuver

in

a

fashion

similar

to

actors

in

the

international

politics

of

early

modern

Europe

or

ancient

India.

In

Af rica:

The

Politics

of

Unity

Wallerstein

has

rejected

all

of

these

possibilities

in

favor

of

yet

another

approach.

He

has

tried

to

look

at

African

international

politics

through

the

eyes

of

those

revolutionary

African

nationalists

who
