In the preface the author quotes Nels Anderson, &dquo;by far the greatest ’skid row
sociologist’ &dquo;: &dquo;... many volumes have already appeared on this subject. I have
read most of them. I can approve none.... The true picture of the hobo and his life
in that best of all possible worlds, Hobohemia, remains to be drawn....&dquo;
One wonders how
Anderson would react to the present study.
But enough of what the book is not. It is a good summary, a useful introduction,
with a number of pointed observations. The clarity of the style admirably suits the
overview nature of the work and it should prove valuable as a supplementary soci-
ology text.
