Antitrust
and the U.S. Supreme Court
1829-1971,
New York: Federal Legal Publications, Inc.
(1972),303 pp., $12.50.
The traditional rhyme states
that
on
her
wedding
day
the
bride should wear "Something old, something new, something
borrowed, something blue" and
carry"
A lucky sixpence in
her
shoe." The first four elements of the rhyme also accurately
summarize the
nature
and content of the book under review.
Between its blue covers lies a novel arrangement by a skillful
compiler of the old and the borrowed. The remaining ele-
ments-luck
and a
sixpence-are
irrelevant. Neither will take
one
very
far
in the field of antitrust.
The scope of the volume is suggested by its subtitle.
It
is
"A
Compendium of Supreme Court Decisions Dealing
With
Restraint
of
Trade
and
Monopoly-Including
All Cases
Decided Under the
Federal
Antitrust
Laws-And
Supple-
mentary
Material." The book is one
part
legal research
tool and one
part
mini-primer on law and economics; it can
be used for doing introductory case research
and
for
ac-
quiring arudimentary understanding of key legal and eco-
nomic terms
and
concepts.
The research materials comprise much the
greater
portion
of the volume and consist
of:
1. the texts of the key provisions of the federal anti-
trust
laws;
2. abstracts of all opinions of the United
States
Su-
preme Court relating to
antitrust
through April 1972
(there is a pocket
part
for
supplementation);
3. three topical indices to the abstracted cases; and
4. an alphabetical table of cases.
The abstracts, many of which have been published pre-
viously,' include
not
just
cases decided under the
antitrust
1Many of the abstracts for decisions from
1873-1949
were origi-
nally compiled by Lee Loevinger for his treatise
