Arctic Doctoral Dissertation Research
Improvement Grants (NSF)
Scope: The National Science Foundation seeks
applications for the Arctic Doctoral Dissertation
Research Improvement Grants Arctic Social Sciences,
Arctic System Sciences, and Arctic Observing Network
announcement to attract research proposals that
advance a fundamental-, process- and systems-level
understanding of the Arctic’s rapidly changing natural
environment and social and cultural systems, and,
where appropriate, to improve our capacity to project
future change.
Deadline: Dec. 15, 2020.
Funds: $1.25 million for up to 25 awards.
Eligibility: Colleges and universities.
Areas: NSF said the Arctic Social Sciences Program
supports research on Arctic social and cultural
systems, present and past, and research relevant
to understanding these systems; the Arctic System
Sciences Program supports projects that study systems
of the Arctic operating at multiple temporal and spatial
scales, systems that can inform our understanding of
Arctic processes and the relationship of Arctic systems
to other global and regional systems; and the Doctoral
Dissertation Research Improvement Grants provide
support to enhance and improve the conduct of doctoral
dissertation projects conducted by doctoral students
enrolled in United States.

Innovation: Instrumentation (NSF)
Scope: The National Science Foundation seeks
applications for the Innovation: Instrumentation
announcement to support the design of novel and
innovative instrumentation and associated methods
that address a clearly dened gap in biologists’ ability to
capture observations of biological phenomena and that
have the potential to be broadly applicable in biology.
Deadline: Proposals are accepted at any time.
Funds: Awards will vary by scope and length of the
project.
Eligibility: Unrestricted.
Areas: NSF said projects may include instrumentation
for observing any level of biological phenomena (e.g.,
molecular, cellular, organismal, ecosystem, biome), and
may propose either new and innovative instrumentation;
instrumentation that signicantly improves the
accuracy, resolution or throughput of data capture;
or advancements that reduce costs of instrument
construction or operation. The scope of the proposed
instrumentation and associated methods can include
but is not limited to microscopy, spectroscopy, imaging,
environmental or biological sensors, robotic sampling or
remote image acquisition.

Biology Integration Institutes (NSF)
Scope: The National Science Foundation seeks
applications for the Biology Integration Institutes
announcement to bring researchers together around
the common goal of understanding how the processes
that sustain life and enable biological innovation
operate and interact within and across different scales
of organization, from molecules to cells, tissues to
organisms, species, ecosystems, biomes and the entire
Earth.
Deadline: Jan. 13, 2021.
Funds: $15 million total for up to six awards.
Eligibility: Colleges and universities and nonprot
organizations.
Areas: NSF said Biology Integration Institutes will focus
on biological themes that enable the discoveries of life’s
innovations. The outcomes from biological integration
will inspire new biotechnologies and applications to
drive our bioeconomy and provide solutions to societal
challenges. This announcement focuses on the
integration of biological subdisciplines, but any eld
beyond biology may be included as needed to address
the overarching biological theme.

Sea Scallop Research Set Aside (DOC)
Scope: The Commerce Department’s National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration seeks
applications for the Sea Scallop Research Set Aside
(RSA) announcement to enhance the understanding
of the scallop resource or contribute to scallop shery
management decisions.
Deadline: Oct. 12, 2020.
Funds: Funds generated from the sale of landed scallop
RSA quota shall be used to cover the cost of research
activities, including vessel costs. Up to 25 awards are
expected.
Eligibility: Colleges and universities; for-prot
organizations; nonprot organizations; state, local and
Native American tribal governments; and qualied
individuals.
Areas: DOC said FY2021 priorities are surveys,
nonsurvey research, scallop biology, scallop recruitment
supplementation, bycatch and gear.
