Bill seeks new state seal after 93 years.

After 93 years of use, the official seal of Alaska state government is due for an overhaul to include a wider diversity of human and natural resources, said Rep. Reggie Joule (D-Kotzebue). Joule and a dozen fellow House members introduced a resolution recently to create a special task force to recommend changes for consideration by the 2004 Legislature.

"The state seal should reflect the modem state we live in and our many Native cultures," Joule said. "The current seal is a hold-over from early territorial days. I believe it's past time to update the seal with the help of Alaskans themselves."
