Employment in the three industries commonly associated with Alaska--oil/gas, fish, and tourism--has followed a clear movement over the past two years.

The leisure & hospitality industry, presented here as a measure of tourism employment in general, tends to hit a peak number in July and August to accomodate summer tourists. There is a slight increase in employment in this sector in December as well, potentially in response to holiday visitors.

The seafood processing industry has two major surges during the course of the year--one in July, in response to the height of the fishing season, and a much smaller peak in February and March for the crab season. Employment in 2005 fishing season was lower than the 2006 fishing season. Employment in the 2006 crab season, however, was higher than the 2007 crab season.

Oil and gas employment followed a smoothly increasing trend, with an average increase of just more than 100 jobs every month.
