The government sector represents a significant portion of total Alaska employment. Of 304,800 non-farm wage and salary employed Alaskans in January 2009, 82,200 individuals worked in government positions. Government thus supplied 27 percent of all non-farm wage and salary Alaska jobs.

Regarding distribution of government employees, 16,100 individuals worked federal positions, 24,700 worked for the state and 41,400 worked at the local level.
