On July 25 the Washington Post published "Murder with Impunity: An Unequal Justice," analyzing homicide arrest data and neighborhood demographics from major US cities over the past decade. For some 26,000 murders, they found police had failed to make an arrest. In approximately 18,600 of those cases the victim was black. The following is part of a letter to the editor published July 30:

It is devastating to see the results of the meticulous research into the unsolved killings of black Americans in major cities across our country. As people guided by care and compassion, we must overcome this biased investigating and ensure that all these tragedies receive equal concern and are given equivalent attention.
