Forty years ago Walther Schubring (who in 1905 edited and translated the Brhatkalpasutra for his doctoral dissertation) wrote: "Dem Umfang nach am kleisten, hat der Kappa die weitestgreifende Kommentierung erfahren. Von den drei Bhasas--zum Kappa, Vavahara und Nisiha, gegen 18000 Gahas zusammen--ist das seinige in der Anlage das bedeutendste und hat seinem kleinen Grundwerk dem Namen Brhatkalpasutra verschafft, anch zum Unterschied von dem traditionell Kalpasutra genannten Textbuundel" (Drei Chedasutras des Jaina-Kanons. Ayaradasao, Vavahara, Nisiha, 1963, p. 1). Based on a computerized text of the six-volume edition by Caturvijaya and Punyavijaya (Bhavnagar: Sri Atmanand Jaina Sangha, referred to I, p. [vi], but not included in the bibliography), Willem Bollee now publishes "a romanized and metrically revised version" of the text, altogether 6,490 gathas covering 784 pages. The text is not accompanied by a translation, but includes summaries of the Pithika and the kappas of the Uddesas (1: viii-xxiv; 2: vii-xxiv).

Volume 1 contains the text of the Pithika and the first Uddesa, volume 2 the text of the remaining Uddesas 2-6. Volume 3 is devoted to the glossary of selected words. In addition, to volume 1 is appended a list of corrections to the author's Materials for an Edition and Study of the Pinda- and Oha-Nijjuttis of the Svetambara Jain Tradition and to The Nijjuttis on the Seniors of the Svetambara Siddhanta (pp. 371-73; cf. my notice, JAOS 120 [2000]: 152, and K.
