As someone who has worked on pay-for-performance emissions reductions programs at the state level in California, the national level in Mexico, and now the multilateral level at the United Nations, I was surprised at the one-sided vision you offered of REDD+ ("A Bright REDD+ Line" by Ay[section]e Gursoz, December/January issue). While some indigenous folks are against REDD+, many--like the Yurok tribe of Northern California (see recent article in The New Yorker)--have realized real benefits.

Carbon trading may not be perfect, but it represents the best way forward that countries can agree on at the United Nations. Scientists with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change tell us that we cannot solve climate change without addressing...
