If it seems everyone has a green thumb, it is because millions of Americans fell in love with gardening during the pandemic. Community gardens, container gardens, and vertical plant walls are sprouting all over, but not every concrete jungle is ripe for urban gardening, so where can city-dwelling green thumbs find their slice of paradise?

LawnStarter ranked 2021 's best places for urban gardening by comparing the 150 biggest U.S. cities across 12 key factors, ranging from the average amount of sunshine between spring and fall to community garden access to the availability of regional gardening clubs.

The top 10 best venues for city-dwelling green thumbs not surprisingly are dominated by Florida and California, each with four. Florida boasts Ft. Lauderdale (No. 1), Hialeah (No. 2), St. Petersburg (No. 4), and Miami (No. 9). California checks in with Huntington Beach (No. 3), Glendale (No. 6), Anaheim (No. 7), and Ontario (No. 10). Atlanta, Ga. (No. 5), and Baton Rouge, La. (No. 8) round out the top 10.

* It is always sunny (and wet) in Florida, which dominates the urban gardening ranking thanks to a winning weather combo: above-average performance in sunshine and top marks in precipitation.
