Best Associate Editor Awards – 2012
The Editors are pleased to announce the following recipients of the Journal of Supply Chain Management’s
2012 Best Associate Editor Award:
Stephen Borgatti (University of Kentucky) Benn Lawson (University of Cambridge)
Roger Calantone (Michigan State University) Frank Montabon (Iowa State University)
The selection of Stephen, Roger, Benn, and Frank was a difficult process, as there were many truly outstanding
Associate Editors (AEs) who contributed their time and insights to the Journal. Our criteria were based on the
AEs’ integration of reviewers’ comments, depth of the AE review, rapport established with the authors, and
timeliness.
We began our evaluation by creating a short-list of AEs based on these criteria. All of the AEs on this short-list
submitted their reviews on-time, or early, since first and foremost a good review is one that is on time. All of
the AEs on this short-list took the effort to establish a constructive and positive rapport in writing their reviews.
They provided major as well as specific comments for improving the paper. In further evaluating these reviews,
we found that Stephen, Roger, Benn, and Frank provided great depth in their comments. They often suggested
concrete means by which the authors could address their individual concerns, as well as the concerns of the
reviewers who had also evaluated the paper. They effectively synthesized reviewers’ concerns, helped authors
to focus on the most relevant and important reviewer comments, and acted as ‘referees’ in cases of conflicting
comments or suggestions from reviewers. They also provided specific suggestions for how to reorganize a
paper’s structure and theory, including identifying specific works in the extant literature, considering different
ways to conceptualize an argument or assertion, and suggesting means to better assess the validity and relevance
of a manuscript’s findings. Additionally, whether these AEs recommended a revision or a rejection of a
manuscript, they explicitly recognized the authors’ time and effort to develop their models and collect their data,
and the potential relevance and contribution of the authors’ study.
We also want to extend a special note of appreciation to the following AEs, who have gone ‘above and beyond
the role of reviewing. These AEs have provided outstanding support of JSCM and its mission to be THE journal
of choice among supply chain scholars, by editing Special Topic Forums and contributing essays to discussion
forums, by acting as points of contact to expand the Journal’s various Boards and invite papers from thought
leaders in the field, and by helping to move JSCM to the top tier journal lists of their respective universities:
Martha Cooper (The Ohio State University) Roger Calantone (Michigan State University)
Fraser Johnson (University of Western Ontario) Britta Gammelgaard (Copenhagen Business School)
Vijay Kannan (Utah State University) Arnold Maltz (Arizona State University)
Aric Rindfleisch (University of Illinois) Scott Sampson (Brigham Young University)
Martin Spring (Lancaster University) Stephan Wagner (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology)
Finally, we want to give a hearty “thank you” to the many additional AEs who have provided superb feedback to
authors of manuscripts submitted to JSCM. Congratulations to all of you on a job well done!
