Bentley Pharmaceuticals, Inc.'s Spanish subsidiary, Laboratorios Davur, has a current registration and markets a generic equivalent to Bayer's branded product, Cipro(R) in 250 mg., 500 mg. and 750 mg. dosages. Although a Bentley subsidiary once manufactured large quantities of this product, it is now produced by a third party that supplies Bentley's Spanish subsidiary.

James R. Murphy, chairman and CEO, commented, "In light of the potential demand and concern for adequate supplies of ciprofloxacin, Bentley management is currently exploring the regulatory requirements and other approvals necessary for registration of an equivalent that could be exported. The supply of ciprofloxacin is currently under review by the U.S. government and the importation of our product would face significant barriers."

Murphy continued, "Regulatory and patent issues in the U.S. would have to be addressed before any supply can take place. Bentley's management is in the preliminary stage of consultation with governmental authorities in Spain and the United States to determine if its subsidiaries can assist the effort to supplement drug reserves.
