Belize Wednesday assured Taiwan that the two countries would 'remain the firmest of friends' as it congratulated President Tsai Ing-wen on the inauguration of her second term in office.
Belize is among a handful of Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries that recognises Taiwan, which China regards as a renegade province and has been pushing countries to adopt the 'One China' policy instead.
But in a congratulatory message, Prime Minister Dean Barrow said that under President Tsai's leadership, 'Belize and Taiwan will remain the firmest of friends.
'We expect not just continuity but expansion of our bilateral relationship. And in the international sphere Taiwan can always count on Belize's support.' he said.
