In a paper published last year in the journal Frontiers in Veterinary Science, animal welfare researcher Jean-Loup Rault of the University of Melbourne posits that overpopulation will eventually lead to real pets being replaced by robots. "Pet robotics has come a long way from the Tamagotchi craze of the mid-'90s," says Rault. "In Japan, people are becoming so attached to their robot dogs that they hold funerals for them when the circuits die."
