You've probably passed the exit to Hope many times on your way to Seward or Homer, or while heading down to the Russian River for some fishing. The thought has probably run through your mind as you passed the exit, "Some day, I need to go and visit."

Hope is a town that has made itself known for its friendly, laid-back attitude, and a visit to Hope can be a great alternative to combat fishing or cross country skiing with the crowds at Turnagain Pass.

The history of Hope goes back to gold rush days, when large amounts of gold were extracted from nearby Six-mile Creek and more than 3,000 people descended on Cook Inlet. Much of that history has been carefully protected, with the original store built in the late 1800s still serving customers today. It is considered one of the best-preserved gold rush communities, and is home to roughly 200 year-round residents.

There are several options available for accommodations, and one of the top choices is Black Bear Bed and Breakfast.

Black Bear B&B is owned by Maggie Holeman, a lifetime Alaskan who worked in the law enforcement and firefighting fields before deciding to retire to Hope to write her memoirs. She soon found herself needing a bit more outside contact and decided that Hope would be a perfect place to open a bed and breakfast. Enlisting the help of local craftsmen, she built a cabin on the property adjacent to her own home.

The cabin is located just 3 miles from downtown Hope and sits alone in a birch forest, offering seclusion and privacy. Comfortably sleeping four, it has a queen bed downstairs and a loft with two twin beds. There is a screened-in back porch, kitchenette and a private bath with shower, as well as lovely oak floors and a large front porch that has a gas grill available for guests.
