This historical fiction is set in the italian Renaissance, in the Medici stronghold of Florence. After years of being held in check, there are those who believe they can overthrow the ruling family. The attempt to wrest control of Florence is a struggle that engulfs the Pazzi family and ends with a decisive show of the Medicis' power. The story here is told by Flora Pazzi, the youngest daughter. Not as pretty as her older sister, and so not subject to the same demands, she is able to blend into the setting and observe the political intrigue. Intertwined into the politics is the day-to-day life of the aristocracy in 1478, how they make their money and how influential the Medicis were in the ebb and flow of commerce.
