As of March 31, 629 bills dealing with firearms had been introduced this session. Last year, legislators reviewed nearly 1,100 such bills, but fewer than 150 became law. And many of those were related to administrative matters, rather than gun control.

LICENSING AND REGISTRATION

Gun licenses apply to the person buying the gun, while registration provides information about the gun itself. Eleven states have laws requiring gun registration. Seventeen have some kind of licensing requirement.

LIMITING ACCESS TO GUNS

Nearly half the states have laws that limit access to guns. Child Access Prevention laws require sale storage or trigger locks, and hold adult gun owners liable if children get their hands on loaded weapons and hurt themselves of someone else. Three states have closed loopholes that alow dealers without federal licenses to sell at gun shows without conducting background checks. Other states impose restrictions on private sales of firearms.
