Top Tip in Attorney Wellness: Pick Something and Begin

Maryt L. Fredrickson

As you know from the cover of this issue of the Wyoming Lawyer, and the other great articles and columns in this issue, the editorial theme is the Top Ten Tips. I've pondered how to distill or extract just ten tips from the two dozen columns about attorney wellness over the last few years and from the topics we haven't covered yet. The number one tip I can discern is simply to begin with what you need. There are ample wellness topics, and tips within each topic, but wellness is not a one-size-fits-all practice. A topic that speaks to you today may not speak to your colleague down the hall. Next week, a different topic may be better suited for you.

The topics we've covered so far have ranged from the sobering and serious, like breaking the stigma against seeking mental health help, to lighthearted, like the benefits of coffee. And some have ranged in between, like the benefits of simple mindfulness practices which might seem foreign to some readers but familiar to others. For other readers, the importance of hydration, nutrition, moving your body, and going outside might have come easy and for other readers, those tips may have rubbed up against some sore spots. The topics over the last few years have been: • mindfulness 101

• the science of silence

• spending time outside each day

• sleep and how to achieve it

• gratitude exercises

• hydration for brain function

• morning mindfulness practices

• health consequences of sitting

• taking vacations

• breaking the stigma against mental health

• surprising benefits of coffee

• benefits of the walk-and-talk meeting

• compassion fatigue

• how to define and evaluate wellness

• laughter

• nutrition

• resilience training

• working remotely for work-life balance

• WyLAP

• defining happiness

• wellness for solo practitioners

All of the Be Well columns are available free and online through the Wyoming State Bar website. If any of these topics speak to you where you are today, I encourage you to reread the columns or any of the many other wellness resources for attorneys available online. If a google search seems fruitless, the ABA compiled a list of attorney wellness resources and links to more articles on its website.[1]
