Can I have a bankruptcy to go--and a divorce, too--please?

It was inevitable. In a world of drive-through banking and fast-food restaurants, it should be no surprise that drive-up legal aid would be sweeping the country, even in Indiana, recently recognized by Forbes as the nation's least-litigious state, except for Utah.

"You can choose from 101 uncontested documents without ever leaving the comfort of your car," says Mark Borkowski, a paralegal, who decided to open a branch of We The People in South Bend a couple years ago.

A sign in his front window reads, "Drive-up divorce from $99. Drive-up bankruptcy from $149. Honk for service." He says that while some customers like the concept of "curbside service," they typically take the paper work home and return it later.

The paper work consists of a questionnaire formulated by attorneys. That information is then transcribed and inserted into legal documents.

Legal services offered include leases, quit-claim deeds, prenuptial agreements and more: 101 legal options, to be exact.

There are 30 branches of We The People nationwide. They often are located in strip malls, like Borkowski's unit. Although the South Bend office is Indiana's only franchise, other units may be on the way.

Carol Bradley, co-owner of the Tampa, Fla.-based company, says there has been interest expressed in opening two more units in Indiana, one in Muncie and the other in Indianapolis. We The People was founded in 1986 by Gary native Larry Ballard, who sold the company in 1992 to Bradley and her partner, Mike Yoelson. Since its inception, the concept of predetermined prices for legal aid has been popular with the general public. Borkowski says the goal of predetermined pricing is to create "a supermarket appearance."
