Bankruptcies increase over the last year: (May 2004 to May 2005).

The number of bankruptcies filed in Alaska has notably increased. In the period of one year, the total number of bankruptcies increased by more than 42 percent. In May 2005, the number of bankruptcies filed was 164, compared to 115 in May 2004. Alaska's total for April 2005 was 158.

The number of bankruptcies filed in Fairbanks drastically increased by more than 93 percent over the last year. In May 2005, there were 29 bankruptcies filed, compared to 15 in May 2004. May's filings were up from 25 bankruptcies filed in April 2005.

Although the increase is not as significant, Anchorage also saw an increase in the total number of bankruptcies filed over the last year. The number of bankruptcies filed in May 2005 was 116, compared to 92 filed in May 2004. This represents a 26 percent increase. April 2005 filings were high as well at 122.
