Amanda Himmelfarb is a 15-year-old in rebellion against her mother, whom she calls "the Captain," and her father, whom she calls "La La Man." She calls her younger sister Melody "Malady." Obviously, she is not happy with the state of affairs in her "sick" family. Her parents quarrel. Her mother orders her around. Her father is ineffectual, and her sister is a whiny, tattle-telling brat. Amanda also doesn't like the way she looks: frizzy red hair, chin too pointed; and the most popular (and bitchy) girl at school regularly torments her by calling her Himmelfart in reference to an unfortunate incident in 7th grade. Amanda's efforts to solve the dreariness of her life revolve around finding a hot boyfriend. To do this, she is willing to submit to whatever a candidate in question might ask, and thus, before the end of the sixth chapter, has allowed herself to be used in a way she finds repugnant.
