Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) introduces legislation to make the Pentagon, the CIA, and any other arm of the national security state report to Congress on their use of commercial databases to find bad guys. Congress must "find out on behalf of all Americans what federal agencies are hoping to do with their personal information," Wyden says.

Enzyme Time

A study published in Nature points to "anti-aging" enzymes that could be used to treat diseases associated with old age. Resveratrol, one of the enzymes, has long been associated with the beneficial health effects of red wine.

Herb Doctors

Cancer, HIV, and multiple sclerosis patients in the Netherlands can go to their doctors for a pot prescription as the country becomes the first in the world to put medical marijuana a prescription away. The Health Ministry buys the herb from two companies licensed to grow it and then packages the pot into small tubs and sends it to drugstores.

Voting machine maker Diebold hawks its wares to states at the same time its CEO raises cash for Republicans. Were Democrats in power, they would doubtless be the object of the pitches. In sum, the motivation is as predictable as it is unseemly.
